Story by Kaitlin Kelly Marine Corps Systems Command After finishing his second Boston Marathon five years ago, Maj. Ken Parisi, a logistics specialist at Marine Corps Systems Command, wanted to tackle a new challenge – triathlons.   He has completed four full-distance 140.6-mile races and 10 half-distance 70.3-mile races. He said this passion for triathlons gave him confidence and made him a better Marine. “I realized I got myself into something pretty big, so I did what all Marines would do—I made a plan, hired a coach, bought a bike, and then just actively and aggressively pursued my training plan until I crossed each finish line,” Parisi said. This fall, he participated in the Ironman 70.3 World Championship at Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, placing in the top 25 percent of 4,500 competitors. Air Defense Airmen compete for German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge

New York National Guard Story by Timothy Jones Wednesday, August 29, 2018 In an innovative effort to promote fitness and improve morale, the 224th Support Squadron recently conducted a German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge competition. A decoration of the Bundeswhehr, the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Germany, the badge is one of the few foreign awards approved for wear on U.S. uniforms. Organized by Master Sgt. Eric Stone and Tech. Sgt. Sean Redden, the competition included four Airmen from the 224th Air Defense Group – the 224th Support Squadron and the 224th Air Defense Squadron make up the 224th, which provides the New York Air National Guard forces at the Eastern Air Defense Sector in Rome.  Three Airmen from the 109th Airlift Wing participated as well. Allen Plata, 20th Equipment Maintenance Squadron stockpile management crew chief, who may have never known about his powerlifting abilities if it weren’t for joining the Air Force. Physical fitness has always been a part of the military way of life and fitness tests ensure members are maintaining that way of life. But for some, push-ups, sit-ups, and running just isn’t enough. “I was bored of the normal workouts so I decided to switch it up and start lifting,” said Plata. “Prior to the military I had never stepped in a gym, I used to just surf or play golf.” Little did Plata know he had a talent that would lead him to rank third nationally and break records in the state of South Carolina.
